Managing people comes down to getting results from your people. The best advice for how to get those results comes from people who have mastered people skills. Yelling and arm twisting only work when your are keeping a watchful eye on your people’s every move. A manager needs to be able to instill a team mentality in his people, then he can leave the premises and not worry that the work is being done at an optimum level by the staff.

An old staple is “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. You may not want to make friends of your staff, but you do want to influence them. This book defines the logistics of eliciting positive performance from others by controlling your behavior towards them. “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John Maxwell is another great book for a new manager to read. Apply these 21 laws to your interaction with your staff and watch the respect and esteem held for you grow. Three of the laws deal with the law of the lid, influence and the law of process. All 21 laws have direct application to any management position. “Becoming a Coaching Leader” is a book written by Daniel Harkavy. The book directs you to develop a core of four principles and to teach your staff to do the same. Develop a life plan, a business vision, a business plan and a priority management plan. Each one of these books is an easy read, which imparts unsuspected principles that will greatly enhance your leadership ability.
